How can we design smart catalysts or light-driven molecular motors? Can we build life-like systems from the bottom up? How can chemistry contribute to cleaner energy, better medicines and sustainable materials? Are you ready to deepen your molecular knowledge to make an impact through advanced research? Then the Master's degree in Chemistry at the University of Groningen is for you!
✔ Spend 50% of your programme doing research in world-class labs
✔ Learn from internationally renowned scientists, including Nobel Prize winner Ben Feringa
✔ Explore academic, industrial, or policy-related career paths with flexible programme profiles
✔ Choose your research specialisation: Synthesis & Catalysis, Chemical Biology, Supramolecular Chemistry, Sustainable Energy, and Polymer Chemistry
This international two-year Master’s programme trains you to become a creative, independent researcher. You’ll build advanced expertise in molecular synthesis, reactivity, materials, and bio-organic systems — and apply it to real-world challenges in health, energy, and sustainability.
The curriculum offers both depth and flexibility, allowing you to specialise in cutting-edge areas or broaden your profile through various tracks and specializations. Your main research project takes place in one of Groningen’s top-ranked institutes. Many students also choose a second project abroad or in industry, building a strong foundation for PhD research or high-level careers in R&D.
