Finance & Control (international), previously International Financial Management, trains you to become a financial professional who understands that a specific approach is needed in every country.

Your employer wants to set up a production facility in Taiwan. It is your task to calculate future revenues, production costs and the net present value of the project.

Or, your company wants to take over one of its competitors and it's your task to research their financial information to determine the value of this company.

As an international financial specialist, you know how to create profitability, take investment decisions, apply risk management and present a business or export plan.

You

You are an ambitious student with good analytical and numerical skills. You want to start a career in an international financial environment, inside or outside the Netherlands. You like working with different nationalities and speak and write business English fluently.

The programme Finance & Control (international)

You will acquire knowledge about finance, accounting and management. You will also learn the necessary business skills, such as intercultural awareness and empathy for those around you. You will work in small groups on international business assignments. Your lecturer is your coach. You will spend 6 to 18 months abroad for an internship or exchange. Upon graduation you will be granted the degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc).

Features of this study programme

Finance & Control (international) is taught in English and many fellow students and lecturers come from abroad. 'International' also means learning about matters like dealing or investing in foreign currencies, recognizing and bridging cultural differences and working on international projects.

Upon your graduation, you will be ready to play a financial role in an international business. Financial professionals are in high demand because every business worldwide needs to produce the financial results of their operations and have them audited for accuracy and legality. Your ability to understand finance, accountancy and business operations will allow you to add value to any business you encounter. It is that particular skill that companies are looking for.

Potential Careers:

  • Financial Manager: You are responsible for reporting the company's accounts correctly. You prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports and you advise the management on financial matters.
  • (Business) Controller: You provide the management with information about the financial situation of a company. You plan and check financial reports, investment analyses, financial balances, income statements, budgets and multi-year plans.
  • Cost Accountant: You are responsible for tracing costs back to underlying activities. You analyse process constraints, targets and project costs.
  • Financial Analyst: You investigate the financial situation of the organisation and the external economic circumstances. You predict the impact of (policy) changes within the company and advise the management about this.
  • Investment Analyst: You conduct research to provide information and investment ideas to fund managers. The information that you provide enables fund managers to make investment decisions.
  • Cash Flow Manager: Cash flow management is the process of monitoring, reviewing and regulating a company's cash flows. You estimate expenses and revenues and anticipate when a business might need cash and when it will have surplus reserves.
  • Risk Manager: You advise organisations on any potential risks to the profitability or existence of the company. You identify and assess threats, put plans in place if things go wrong and decide how to avoid, reduce or transfer risks.

Follow-up education

After your studies you can do a master's in the Netherlands or abroad, such as Accounting & Finance, Financial Economics, Urban, Port and Transport Economics, Health Economics, Marketing Management, Information Management or Financial Management. Or you can take a post-graduate MBA programme.
