Możliwości kariery
Is raising the dykes the only way to reduce flood risk, or are there smarter, cheaper solutions? How do you install a resilient electricity grid in a hurricane zone? Which factors do you have to keep in mind to ensure that new roads or structures will endure the effects of climate change? How do you secure and balance the many interests of the government, residents, companies, or the environment in such large projects? If these questions fascinate you, the three-year, English-taught Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering is the right choice for you.

In the Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering, you acquire both the technical and non-technical knowledge you need to take on complex civil engineering challenges. You learn everything a civil engineer needs to know in order to design, construct and manage large projects in construction & infrastructure, water management, and traffic & transport. You also become an expert in the many important organizational and non-technical issues involved in such projects, from legal and administrative aspects to communication, project and process management.

As in any Civil Engineering programme, you, of course, learn things like how to calculate constructions. But here you also learn to map out the consequences of a project like that for people, companies or nature in the area. You get familiar with innovative construction or water management techniques, while also learning to identify circular and resilient solutions. You spend three years immersing yourself in mathematics, physics, mechanics, fluid dynamics and design subjects, but also in process management, communications and aspects such as environmental effects and management.

As a civil engineer from Twente, it is highly likely that your career not just revolves around construction and technology, but that you have a more interdisciplinary role, for example, as a project leader, as a manager or in Research & Development.

Wymagania rekrutacyjne

QUICKLY SETTING TO WORK

The Bachelor's programme at the University of Twente is rated the top Civil Engineering programme in the Netherlands. This programme prepares you for positions that focus on building and construction, but also on the many organizational aspects involved. There is a lot of demand for people who feel at home in both areas – in The Netherlands and abroad. In the business world, demand for engineers from Twente is high. One hundred per cent of students who complete their Master's degree have a job within three months. The Civil Engineering programme qualifies you for various different kinds of employers:

ENGINEERING AND CONSULTANCY AGENCIES

Many civil engineers work at engineering or consultancy agencies. These companies are often contracted by the government and other businesses to carry out civil engineering projects. You can help these clients carry out complex model analysis or by creating a civil engineering design, for example. Design focuses on integrating scientific knowledge with the systematic development of new solutions for complex problems.

GOVERNMENT

Many civil engineering projects are initiated by government bodies, such as Rijkswaterstaat in the Netherlands, provinces, municipalities and water boards. They need engineers and consultants, but also contractors to carry out these projects. Also, together with research institutions, they research new developments.

CONTRACTORS AND PROJECT DEVELOPERS

You will be welcomed at large consultancy and construction companies, such as Arcadis or Ballast Nedam, if you have specialized in the organization of construction processes. At first you will gain experience in (executive) construction, for example, as an assistant project leader or management trainee. Later you can move on to other roles. Central here is your ability to combine knowledge from different scientific areas to give new solutions a place in a complex business environment.

RESEARCH

Universities and research institutions, such as Deltares or TNO, research new developments – either at their own initiative or at the request of the government or a business. Think, for example, of researching the development of an island at sea to solve congestion problems around Amsterdam’s airport, Schiphol, or of traffic guidance through information panels above the motorways. Research is about being able to critically weigh your existing scientific knowledge and being able to apply it to develop new knowledge.
