During the winter of my final year of Secondary School, I realised it was probably time to start thinking seriously about university. I opened Google, typed in two simple words, “study abroad”, and discovered Kastu.
I cannot explain exactly why, but something immediately felt right. The registration was simple, the requirements were clear, and the Kastu coordinators helped me prepare the necessary documents and register for the English language test required by the universities.
The entire process went more smoothly than I had expected. I tried to stay positive, focused on what I needed to do, and with every completed step, my dream of studying abroad began to feel more real.
In May, I found out that I had been accepted by almost all the universities I had applied to. I was completely overwhelmed with happiness. Suddenly, I had another difficult decision to make: which offer should I choose?
My heart pulled me in one direction, logic in another, and my parents had their own opinion. After considering everything carefully, I chose Denmark. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I could have made.
I started studying Natural and Cultural Heritage Management at the University College of Northern Denmark. I lived in the same small town where I studied. It was peaceful and welcoming, with everything I needed nearby, while a larger city was also easy to reach.
The university immediately surprised me. It was modern, comfortable, and designed around students’ needs. The lecturers were incredibly friendly and approachable, sometimes even more supportive than people you had known for years.
The campus offered plenty of places to study, relax, eat, exercise, and spend time with friends. There was a large library, sports facilities, a swimming pool, and even a room filled with musical instruments. It felt like the university wanted students not only to learn, but also to enjoy being part of the community.
At the beginning of the academic year, every new student received an access card that opened the university’s facilities and became an important part of everyday student life.
Classes usually took place from the morning until the afternoon. We often started with theory and then moved on to practical activities. I loved being able to use new knowledge immediately because everything became easier to understand when we applied it in real situations.
My programme covered culture, nature, communication, and entrepreneurship, so the studies were broad and constantly introduced me to something new.
My class was incredibly international. I studied alongside people from Hungary, Romania, Poland, Lithuania, the United States, Denmark, Spain, Slovakia, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, and Germany. The students were also of different ages and had very different life experiences.
Every conversation became an opportunity to learn something about another culture, language, tradition, or way of thinking. The international classroom taught me things that no textbook ever could.
Of course, moving abroad was not perfect every day. At the beginning, there were moments when I missed my family, friends, and familiar surroundings. But I reminded myself that studying abroad had been my own decision and that I wanted to make this period of my life as meaningful as possible.
I tried to approach every challenge with optimism rather than fear. That attitude helped me adapt, meet people, and notice opportunities around me.
Only three weeks after arriving, I found a job in a café. I had simply stopped there for tea when one of the employees approached me and asked whether I happened to be looking for work. Of course, my answer was yes.
It felt like an incredible coincidence, but it also taught me something important: when you are open, active, and willing to try, opportunities can appear when you least expect them.
I was able to earn my own money, become more independent, and create a new life much faster than I had imagined.
My advice to future students is to believe in yourselves, stay curious, and approach new opportunities with courage. Choose a programme that genuinely excites you, prepare carefully, and do not allow temporary fear to stop you.
Kastu helped me turn one dream into reality. Studying abroad then gave me the confidence to start dreaming even bigger.
